Yum Jung Ah Discusses Why She Joined The Upcoming Drama “The Defects,” Her Villain Role, And Working With Won Jin Ah And Dex

Yum Jung Ah has shared her thoughts on her upcoming drama “The Defects”!

Based on a popular webtoon, “The Defects” is an action thriller about children who have been abandoned by their adoptive parents—and their fight for survival and revenge.

Yum Jung Ah plays Kim Se Hee, the chairwoman of a large hospital and the head of a charitable foundation. On the surface, she is a respected figure in the medical community. In reality, she secretly leads an illegal adoption trafficking ring.

Driven by a warped belief that only superior genes deserve to survive, she runs a disturbing operation known as “Child Shopping.” She does not hesitate to cross ethical lines to achieve her goals.

As anticipation grows over how Yum Jung Ah will portray such a bold character, the actress opened up about why she chose the project and her thoughts ahead of the premiere.

She said, “The subject felt fresh, and as an actor, it offered plenty of room for creative exploration. The active journey of growth for children carrying emotional scars was crafted into a dramatic narrative, and the chance to play a powerful character who embodies absolute evil made it a compelling challenge.”

Yum Jung Ah highlighted three keywords to describe her character Kim Se Hee: “duality,” “absolute evil,” and “complex.” She said, “These words might sound a bit negative, but they reflect how layered and deeply wicked the character is. I felt a real sense of satisfaction in bringing out Se Hee’s dual nature.”

The actress also discussed what she focused on most in her performance, saying, “I have played villains in previous projects, so I gave a lot of thought to creating a character with a different tone this time. Starting from the premise that Se Hee is not simply evil, I had many discussions with the director, writer, and production team to help viewers understand what turned her into a monster.”

Yum Jung Ah expressed her affection for co-stars Won Jin Ah and Dex, with whom she shared the screen. “Both actors are truly lovable, and just seeing them makes me smile,” she said. “Won Jin Ah is not only a talented actress but also full of energy, and she played a big role in keeping the set atmosphere lively.”

She continued, “Dex may still be getting used to acting and the set environment, but his sincerity was impressive. I believe he will become a great actor in the future.”

Finally, she shared a message for fans. “This is a strong production, built through the continued collaboration and thoughtful efforts of the cast and crew,” she said. “I am confident it will be an enjoyable series, especially one where viewers can appreciate the talent and charm of the younger actors. Please give ‘The Defects’ plenty of attention.”

“The Defects” is set to premiere on July 21 at 10 p.m. KST.
