There are a few idol group acronyms I always have to re-research when new material rolls around. While I recognize the name VVUP, I can’t instantly recall one of their songs. Looking back, the group’s song ratings have fallen between a “7” and an “8” on this blog, which explains my confusion. Songs within that range tend to blend into each other.
New single House Party is dead set on becoming memorable through repetition. The majority of the song involves VVUP saying “it’s a house party” over and over again. I can get behind its campy nature, which reminds me of the not-so-serious K-pop of generations past. The song is quite stupid in a fun way, from its plonky dance beat to the deadpan delivery. However, a track like this also needs killer hooks to flourish long-term. Like so many dance bangers of this era, House Party is driven by too much monotone speaking for my taste. It’s enjoyable for about ninety seconds, but even two and a half minutes is a stretch for this style. With that said, this is only a pre-release so we’ll see if the group can develop it further for their actual comeback.
