Dex has shared his thoughts on his upcoming acting debut in “The Defects”!
Based on a popular webtoon, “The Defects” is an action thriller about children who have been abandoned by their adoptive parents—and their fight for survival and revenge.
Dex plays Jung Hyun, a human weapon raised in the shadows by Kim Se Hee (Yum Jung Ah), the head of SH Medical Foundation. Jung Hyun is also the de facto operator of an illegal child trafficking and adoption ring. Completely obedient to Se Hee’s commands, he is a ruthless figure who relentlessly hunts down children like Kim Ah Hyun (Won Jin Ah), who have been “returned” after being adopted but managed to survive.
Dex shared his thoughts on taking on the role, saying, “I’m still lacking as an actor, but I was excited because I felt I could fully showcase my strength in action.” He added, “The biggest reason I chose this project was because I wanted to learn as much as I could by acting alongside Yum Jung Ah.”
Dex revealed that he focused especially on preparing for the action scenes to portray Jung Hyun convincingly. “Since Jung Hyun is a human weapon, I thought it was important to show his rough and brutal side well,” he explained. “With the help of the action school team, I was able to bring realistic action to life. Thanks to everyone sweating and working hard together, we achieved great synergy on set.”
Regarding his similarity to his character, Dex shared, “Like Jung Hyun, I’m also someone who shows blind loyalty to those I trust and follow.” Choosing “cold-blooded,” “deficiency,” and “warmth” as three keywords to describe Jung Hyun, he elaborated, “Because of his deprived childhood, he naturally became cold-blooded, but deep inside, there’s still a warmth he was born with that hasn’t completely disappeared.”
Speaking about the filming environment, Dex said, “The atmosphere was so good that it was the perfect environment to focus.” On working with Yum Jung Ah, he revealed, “When filming scenes with her, I intentionally kept my distance to stay immersed as Jung Hyun rather than myself.”
He continued, “She silently watched over me and seemed to understand that my behavior came from passion. I actually wanted to speak to her more comfortably like I do on variety shows, but I couldn’t, and I worried she might misunderstand. However, she understood my sincerity completely. Someday, when I become a senior actor, I want to be someone who embraces juniors the way she does.”
Finally, Dex expressed his hopes for the drama, saying, “‘The Defects’ is a project that all the actors and staff poured their passion into. I hope it delivers both impact and catharsis to many viewers. Please look forward to it and show lots of support.
“The Defects” is set to premiere on July 21 at 10 p.m. KST.
