Kim Nam Gil And Kim Young Kwang Share 3 Reasons To Watch Their New Drama “Trigger”

The team behind Netflix’s new series “Trigger” has revealed key reasons to tune in ahead of its premiere!

“Trigger” is an action-packed thriller drama set in South Korea, a country known for its strict gun control laws. The story follows two men who, for their own reasons, take up arms amidst a rising wave of illegal firearms mysteriously appearing across the nation that leads to an unprecedented surge in gun-related crimes. Kim Nam Gil stars as Lee Do, a police officer who picks up guns once more to uphold justice, while Kim Young Kwang plays Moon Baek, a mysterious figure who aids Lee Do amid rising gun crimes while concealing his own secrets.

Ahead of its release today, the production team shared three reasons viewers should not miss “Trigger”:

    1. A premise that sparks the imagination

Since the teaser’s release, the show’s unique premise has garnered the most attention. In South Korea, where firearms are illegal, the idea of guns being delivered to people’s doorsteps like everyday packages has intrigued many.

Kim Nam Gil commented, “The premise felt very fresh. The story doesn’t treat guns lightly; instead, it uses them as a symbol to explore human nature and societal structures. While it’s an action series, it also feels like a psychological drama that asks how far a person can fall—and what they can still protect.”

Director Kwon Oh Seung described “Trigger” as “a story everyone has imagined at least once,” hinting at episodes that blur the line between reality and imagination. In today’s world, where everyone has their own “trigger,” the drama raises questions about what happens when safety nets disappear, and what choices people make in such a world.

    2. Kim Nam Gil and Kim Young Kwang’s fierce chemistry

Another major draw is the explosive chemistry between Kim Nam Gil and Kim Young Kwang, both known for their commanding presence in action thrillers. Kim Nam Gil plays Lee Do, a former military sniper turned police officer who understands the double-edged nature of guns better than anyone. Faced with rising illegal firearm cases, he fights to disarm the public and prevent chaos. Because he wields his gun to protect lives, his action scenes are restrained yet powerful, delivering thrilling moments grounded in deep emotion.

Meanwhile, Kim Young Kwang’s transformation is also generating buzz. His character Moon Baek is Lee Do’s mysterious ally, exuding a carefree and unpredictable charm that contrasts with Lee Do’s composed and serious demeanor. After a fateful encounter at a crime scene, the two form an unexpected partnership.

Working together for the first time, the two actors built strong mutual trust. Kim Nam Gil shared, “Kim Young Kwang portrayed Moon Baek’s changes throughout the story so well, which helped me express Lee Do’s emotional arc more clearly. We were able to sync our rhythms and create a dense, immersive chemistry.” Kim Young Kwang also praised their teamwork, saying, “Our chemistry was amazing. Kim Nam Gil maintained his character’s essence so consistently that I could react naturally and continue Moon Baek’s tone seamlessly.”

    3. Stories of different “triggers” and dynamic action

“Trigger” features a range of characters who pick up guns for their own reasons, with each episode delving into the personal triggers behind their decisions. As Lee Do and Moon Baek investigate the cases, they weave these individual stories into a larger narrative.

Director Kwon Oh Seung explained, “When creating each episode, we focused on situations people could genuinely relate to. The characters who pick up guns aren’t extraordinary or extreme—they’re ordinary individuals you might meet in everyday life.”

He added, “Unlike flashy action series that treat guns purely for entertainment, ‘Trigger’ tailors its action scenes to each character, focusing on their emotions, situations, and attitudes to create realistic, emotionally driven gun sequences.”

In this way, “Trigger” delivers all the intensity of an action thriller while diving deep into its characters’ psychology. Kim Nam Gil summed it up: “Each episode features a different person picking up a gun. The key is to follow why they felt they had no choice—and what their ‘trigger’ is.” Kim Young Kwang emphasized, “In the story, guns spread like a virus. But whether or not to pull the trigger is entirely up to the person holding it. That’s the core of ‘Trigger.’”

“Trigger” premieres on July 25 at 4 p.m. KST.
