SHINee’s Taemin has shared a personal apology regarding the comments he made about the recent earthquakes in Japan.

On July 5, after performing at Day 1 of “Music Core in Japan” at Japan’s Belluna Dome, Taemin held a live broadcast together with his bandmate Minho. During the broadcast, Taemin brought up the earthquakes, as well as the viral prediction in a decades-old manga that a “megaquake” would hit Japan that day.

“About that prophecy, we’re still safe, so you don’t have to worry too much,” said Taemin. Referring to his MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator), he continued, “Because I’m a major N, I imagined, ‘What should I do if an earthquake hits while I’m singing [on stage]? Would it look cool if [the stage] shook here? If it gradually gets more intense, is it really going to shake like it’s 3D? There are fireworks going off and flame on stage, so what happens if starts shaking?”

After Taemin came under fire for allegedly trivializing a major natural disaster, he posted an apology in both Korean and Japanese on social media the following day.

Taemin’s full Korean apology is as follows:

    Hello, this is Taemin.

I apologize for speaking thoughtlessly about the earthquakes out of the desire to reassure my worried fans. I am reflecting on the fact that I failed to fully consider the situation of the locals or the dangers posed by natural disasters.

I, too, was very worried [about the earthquakes], and I am relieved that they passed without major damage. In the future, I will become a person who thinks more carefully before speaking.

    Thank you.
