Song Review: BoA – Good For U

As if BoA wasn’t busy enough with her album released last week, she’s back with a new Japanese single as well. We have groundbreakers like BoA and Tohoshinki to thank for K-pop’s popularity in Japan, and it’s always nice to see them take another well-deserved victory lap. Good For U may not be a revelatory new ripple in BoA’s storied career, but it’s a decent enough bop.

Having traversed pretty much every K-pop sub-genre you can imagine across the past twenty-something years, BoA plays with current trends on this groovy track. The song has a generic sheen, driven by familiar instrumental flourishes and melodies that don’t require much stretching or unique personality. The chorus bunts, opting for a repetitive sing-talk approach rather than the melodically explosive singing we all know BoA is capable of. In this way, the track is yet another example of good vibes that don’t really go anywhere.

Because of this, Good For U is unlikely to end up on any BoA best-ofs. It’s the kind of song you listen to once, enjoy well enough, and promptly forget about a week later. If it wasn’t for BoA’s incredible legacy propping up the material, there’d be nothing much to write about the song. It’s catchy. It’s polished. It’s fine. It’s… rather unnecessary.
