To be honest, I skip past a lot of idol-turned-soloist releases. Every once and awhile you’ll get something that feels artistically different, but nine times out of ten you’re usually in store for a sentimental ballad or a mid-tempo r&b/rock/pop track — especially if a big agency is behind it. Pentagon’s Kino made his solo debut in 2022 with a forgettable effort, but it’s clear he’s taken much more creative control with his new EP.
Outside of K-pop, I listen to a lot of club music so a song like Dirty Boy doesn’t feel particularly novel. Even within the industry, thumping dance beats are beginning to make a comeback. However, what I love about Dirty Boy is that it comes across as the work of an artist. I get the sense that this is what Kino truly wants to be doing right now and the track doesn’t feel rubber stamped by committee.
Most of Dirty Boy is simply “charismatic talking over a sleazy beat” — of which their is no shortage in global music at the moment. Thankfully, Kino’s got a great “charismatic talking over a sleazy beat” voice and the rhythms here are sticky enough to work. The song is at its best when the speech grows more melodic and the production amps up to its full potential. K-pop Star alum Jamie makes a compelling sparring partner (it’s exciting to see how her sound and performance style has progressed) and Dirty Boy draws toward a truly thrilling finale. Even if it’s not for you, the song will surely get you moving.
